Distractions

I am not a woman, so I will not even begin to understand the thrill women derive from driving and putting on make-up at the same time. You may call it multi-tasking (which I personally think is a myth), but I call it distracting. I added the cell phone for an added level of difficulty. I don’t recall ever seeing this exact scene in reality.

I probably drew this woman’s face 5 times. Each time, she looked sad or depressed. She looked like a man in one sketch, and a 13 year old boy in another. I finally arrived at this. Still a bit sleepy around the eyes, but fresh and alert just the same.

This is another self-portrait also. I think from now on, I will draw one each week. It’s a really good exercise. I drew a reflection of myself in the car door, so really this is a double self portrait.

This piece is unfinished…maybe. If you look at the front tire, the spokes are missing. I like the effect it has currently of being chrome with a mirror finish. That requires drawing the reflection of the brakes in the chrome. I kinda wanna leave it for a while and decide later how/if I want to fill it in. I will probably leave it as is and move on. I love white paper and theres plenty of it – as well as ideas swimming in my head.

Working Class Clown

This is my attempt at surrealism. Every once in a while, the mood strikes and I create something a bit outside of my normal subject matter. I recently was reacquainted with the works of an old college buddy, Michael Brown. Please, take a moment and check out his work. I am sure you’ll like it. I am really inspired by his works and decided to play around. The snake in the clown’s neck is a bit of an ode to Mike. You can see it in some of his paintings.

It’s fun to play with themes some times, especially when you create every day. Adds another dimension and may take my art – or an aspect of it – in a different direction. Either way, I usually take something from it and use it in other works. In this case, I really like how the hole in the wall where the snake is coming out of and some of the flat gears. Also, I’m pretty happy with the transparency in the balloon-intestines. That may be something I develop further when I revisit my surreal side. Anyhoo, I hope you enjoy it. Let me know.

Self Portrait

Every once in a while, I do a self portrait. It is something I’ve done since my college days at SUNY New Paltz. Thank you Senior Joe Ramos. Its sort of a reality check. Anyhoo, this is me from about 2 weeks ago. I will post the others when I get a second to do so. Drawing a sketch a day does keep one busy. LOL.

Girl in the window

This is a tribute to one of my favorite American artists, Edward Hopper. Not to be confused with Dennis Hopper, the actor (Damn good actor, by the way. Oh, and if you didn’t know, he used to party with James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor. Buy his bio – Here. Its a great read). But alas, I digress. Back to Edward. His paintings were very lonely. They rarely had more than one person in them and when they do, the subjects are never interacting. Yet, they are just as beautiful and graceful as the environment itself. Man, I could get lost in his paintings. I once saw Early Sunday Morning at the Whitney in NYC. Very impressive.

This is one of my girlfriends favorite sketches.

Creepy Guy

Remember when I mentioned I like the old Detective magazine covers? Well, that includes the old “Creepy” and “Tales from the Crypt” covers as well. They’re all really cool. If you think about it, the reason for the cover art is to inspire the individual to pick it up, thumb through and then buy it. The art inspires via emotional connection – or as I like to say, Art evokes emotion.

I am truly blessed by God. He let me borrow such a fun gift.

Fortune Teller

This is a typical sketch I will post here. It’s one of my favorite subjects to draw – robots. I love to draw mechanical objects because of all the cool detail. The fortune teller aspect is a reminder that we can’t predict the future, no matter who we are, nor should we even worry about it. Life is a series of “now-nesses”. Embrace them and live for them.

The style is noir. I really love the old pulp-fiction covers from the early 30s to the 50s. I will also be posting some of my renditions of these covers as well. I have had a couple of photoshoots done and really look forward to sketching them for you.

Fantasy Landscape

This is another study with robots. I will draw them when I want to convey a feeling or a situation and don’t have any one or scene in mind. They are – sort of – my fall back position. I will leverage atmosheric perspective when I’m able. This technique requires drawing anything in the background with loose, gestural strokes, thus making it lighter and pushes it farther back into the background. Feel free to email me with questions. I would really like this site to be educational as well as entertaining.

The Old Merchant

Every once in a while, I will draw something that I am really proud of. This is one of them. I am thinking I will paint this some day (keep in mind, I have about four or five canvases that I’ve started)…Gah.
