Metro Study

I had the buildings sketched out about 3 years ago. It was for a job I did for Intellum. The rest, I added today. I have always liked these buildings, however I thought they lacked something. Apparently, it was a robot walking through the scene.

I am starting to reuse elements in these types of scenes. I enjoy drawing them and want to see where they’ll go. The blimps are definitely WoW influenced. Perspective is key in this sketch. I was gonna draw another vehicle going in the opposite direction, but thought it may be a bit too busy and take away from the buildings.

 

Amy’s Parents

This was for a friend of mine. There are not many people you can say you’ve known for forty years. Can you imagine being married to one for fifty? I can’t imagine doing anything voluntarily for that long.

This was a lot of fun. You can probably gather that the sketches on top are the younger versions of the couple below. When I created the groups of sketches, I tried to copy the eyes from the top characters and bring them down to the older ones. I think it worked, overall. The eyes match and it makes the older couple look a bit more lively.

The Wensleys

If you’re curious as to what the family looks like, well, here they are. This is as far as I’ve gotten to date. I would love to give them names and stories soon.

Wensley Mfg. Co. Don’t plan for “if”…plan for Wensley.

I was going to put a W in each of the medallions, but I felt it might be a bit much.

I didn’t do the third step of putting the dark lines in this time. I wanted to leave out some detail and make it look more like a tintype.

I can really appreciate the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci. Especially, the ones that depict machines that won’t be built for hundreds of years. He was truly a renaissance man.

I am talking with a friend of mine about building a Wensley something-or other. It doesn’t have to do anything but look neat and have moving parts, powered by a motor system of any kind, even human. Wensley is my made up company name from another world. They make everything from electro-shock-socks to coat hangers. The logo is the “W” you see above. I think I may have borrowed it from Wonka.

Rucker 13

This is an idea I have. I created it as a Steampunk motorcycle, but it turned out to be more Art Deco than anything. The sketch is a rare glimpse into my pocket sketchbook. Not because it’s a mysterious enigmatic repository for my deepest secrets, but more because I usually draw at my desk or in my larger sketchpad. I carry the pocket sketchpad just in case I have an idea. It’s also a place to park quotes I find interesting and my grocery list.

I enjoy drawing mechanical objects a lot. I like to imagine how systems fit together and what they look like. In this case, I was more concerned with the systems than the overall look (hence, Art Deco vs. Steampunk).

Halloween

Art evokes emotion.

My son doesn’t like this sketch. He says it’s just too creepy. I said that’s the whole point of drawing it. If you’re creeped out by it, then it’s effective. This is my Halloween sketch. It’s meant to be creepy. I hope it has that same effect on you as well.

Mwahahaha…

I love the new merging-of-techniques style. In this sketch, I am going for a plastic-rubber membrane look. I was gonna go for translucent, so I was going to draw intestines, but I didn’t have time.

This was an idea I had after looking at the picture below.

My routine has become sketch the whole thing out with contour lines and shading, then I blend the whole thing, then outline and the initial highlights are added, followed by light blending. Lastly, I draw the details in and pull the final highlights out. This is the result of that.
